The Pillow Fort Magazine is going on hiatus AND off sale :(
I’ve got some news… some news that will probably make many of you sad and/or annoyed.
The Pillow Fort Magazine is going on hiatus and back issues will no longer be available from 1st Jan 2015.
What does this actually mean though?
It means that the last issue (#5/Winter) will be the last issue to be published for the foreseeable future.
There is, for the time being, no ‘next issue’.
It also means you will not be able to buy The Pillow Fort Magazine at all from 1st January 2015.
Why is this happening?
1. The magazine hasn’t been selling as well as it needs to in order for me to justify continuing to make it.
In order for it to be the beautiful product it is, I need to hire a professional designer each issue. I also have to factor in the number of hours it takes for me to collate, proofread, organise, and put together the magazine. I have to appropriately value my time/energy. Whilst The Pillow Fort is undeniably a passion of mine, it’s not a hobby business. I have other hobbies (and a hobby business!). Unfortunately I cannot afford to continue making the magazine at a loss (which is currently happening).
2. A new EU VAT law is coming into effect and it makes selling the magazine nearly impossible.
This is long, boring and complicated, but the gist of it is that from 1st January 2015 I have to register for VAT in every EU country that I make a sale of the magazine to. This is virtually an impossible task, and the new law is going to affect millions of small business owners worldwide. There is no lower end threshold. If I sell just one magazine to say… Sweden, then I need to register VAT in that country.
If you sell a digital product of any kind, I urge you to educate yourself about how this law will affect you. There’s a great blog post (with additional links) about it here. If you want to find out more, follow #vatmoss and #vatmess on twitter.
Yes, but only until 31st December 2014.
If you were thinking about buying back issues, don’t hang about!
Oh no! I wanted to write for a future issue!
I will not be taking any new submissions for the magazine. However, I fully encourage you to consider writing a guest blog post instead.
Are you doing any sort of ‘deal’ before it’s taken off sale?
Yes! From now until 31st December 2014, buy any two issues and get one free. Just add any 3 issues to your cart and the discount will automatically be applied.
Also, heads up, that to celebrate The Pillow Fort’s 1st birthday on 29th November, there’s going to be a 72 hour Pay What You Can Offer (minimum £1 per issue) from Friday 28th November – Sunday 30th November.
Is there anything I can do to ‘help’?
Please consider signing this petition. It might not mean there’s any new issues of The Pillow Fort Magazine available for a while, but it would allow me to continue selling back issues after 1st January 2015 – which is a vital income source for me.
